Good performances during the last few weeks, by some of Great Britain's leading athletes promised well for future international meetings and the Olympics.
In the sprints, Archer and Macdonald Bailey have both been well inside even time and judging by his display on Whit Monday, Alan Pennington is still a force to be reckoned with in the furlong. Arthur Wint, the quaint airman from Trinidad, looks like lowering A. G. K. Brown's quarter mile British record for he is consistently touching 48 secs. under bad conditions. We have not seen anything of our star half-milers, but P. Harrison (Manchester University) whose 4 min. 16 secs. mile at Manchester last week won him the Harry Sharpe Memorial Bowl is probably our best middle distance hope. Douglas Wilson is still rated our best three-miler and he is training for the A.A.A. Championships in July. The weather has upset local athletics recently and lack of competition is bound to show its mark on future performances. Next Saturday June 29th, the N.C.A.A. Senior Championships are being held at Fallowfield. The Old Boys v. Wallasey Grammar School match on Thursday evening June 27th, promises to provide some keen running, and as the school have a bigger field to choose from they should have little difficulty in winning.
