In the Merseyside championships on Saturday, Wallasey Athletic Club emphasised its claim to be regarded as the premier weight lifting club in the district.
Norman Sadler won the light heavyweight class with a total of 693 lbs. and Jack McCullough, who recently gained 2nd place in the British Secondary Championships, was unopposed in the light weight class, lifting 633 lbs.
Ron Brownbill surpassed his own best total with a new figure of 490 lbs. to take second place to Ron Smith, the British 8 stone champion, who lifted 495 lbs. In the body building department too Wallasey had a showings - Norman Pritchard took second place in the physical excellence competition to discover ''Mr. Merseyside.'.
Despite the chilling wind more than a dozen athletes limbered up at Leasowe Road playing fields when Wallasey Athletic Club's track season opened on May Day.
The track and sprint lanes have now been marked out and the jumping pits re-dug and sanded and training will begin for the county championships early next month.
On Wednesday, May 17, Jack Pozzi, former Northern Counties champion will coach in long jumping; on Saturday May 27, the club are holding a dance at Harrison Hall.
