Members of Wallasey Athletic Club who attended the Second Birkenhead & Wirral Sports Festival at Upton on Whit Monday, were pleased to witness the success of their popular track secretary, Ted Bollard, whose pole vaulting won him 3rd place in the open handicap event.
Bollard had a lucky escape when the pole he was using broke under the weight of another lighter competitor, fortunately without serious results.
Although, several notable Northern athletes, who might have been present, were engaged at the White City in the Inter-Counties meeting, there were many exciting contests, at Upton watched by a large holiday crowd.
Other Wallasey Athletic Club athletes who reached the final in their events included Penny Price (100 yards), Bob Fullerton (junior 880 yards), Tony Dickinson (senior 880 yards) and the women's relay team.
Today the Cheshire County championships are contested at Port Sunlight Oval. Work continues on the new headquarters site at Leasowe Road by the playing fields every weekday evening at 7 p.m. and all members are asked to rally round. There is an especial need for the assistance of bricklayers whose services will be most welcome.
