Wallasey Athletic club novice cross-country championship, for those members who have not won an open handicap or championship award at one mile or over, was decided over the 5-mile course at Leasowe last Saturday afternoon.
After a lively tussle, during which the lead changed hands more than once, young Alan Whitburn moved out in front to win in 32 minutes 15 seconds with new senior members Bob Akroyd (34 minutes 33 seconds) second and Cyril Austin (36 minutes 43 seconds) third.
The prize for the sealed handicap run in conjunction with the race was won by Ramsey Hewson, whose time for the course was 32 minutes 35 seconds. The senior pack covered the 7-mile course, Arnold Dinsdale and Denis Dickinson leading the way home in 43 minutes 30 seconds with Eric Foster third in 44 minutes 10 seconds.
This afternoon at Leasowe Rd., the club run will take the form of a trial over seven miles for the selection of the club youth (under 18) and senior (over 18) teams for the Cheshire County Championships to be held at Stockport on December 10. Club members and friends wishing to travel to Stockport by coach should notify Ron Hubbard (phone Birkenhead 3550) immediately. W.A.C. teams for West Lancashire championships at West Derby will be selected from Akroyd, Austin, Bibby, Bollard, Cockshott, Fullerton, Hawksley, Hewson, Lancaster, Lynch, D. B. Johnson, K. Ledward, Maddock, McCaig, Prowse, Ryan, Scammel, Weir and Wright, who should meet on Liverpool Landing Stage at 1.45 p.m. next Saturday.
