The second annual Cheshire County Cross-Country Championships, run at Woodbank Park, Stockport last Saturday, resulted in victories for East Cheshire Harriers with Wirral A.C. as runners-up in both the senior and youths' races.
The individual winners were, in the senior race, Green for Wirral, and in the junior race, Frost, of East Cheshire. Wallasey Athletic Club's senior team, Bob Johnston 9, Denis Dickinson 25, H. Thompson 28, A. Dinsdale 41, Tony Dickinson 49, and Kelly 51, found the 7-mile course heavy going underfoot and were placed 6th. Foster 53, and Hewson 63, also ran for Wallasey. Johnston whose performance has justified his selection as reserve for the County team, is to be congratulated.
Wallasey's youths' team packed well, Ledward 14, Weir 15, Maddock 16, Whitburn 21, and were unlucky to be placed 5th when Sale Harriers who were 3rd secured only 8 points less. Fullerton 28, Scammell 24, Johnson 20, also ran for Wallasey.
On Wednesday evening the small audience who disregarded the rain to attend A.A.A. coach Denis Watts lecture at the Wallasey Grammar School on a 'General introduction to athletics' were rewarded by a lively and lucid discourse which will be followed up by a further visit from the coach on the track next season.
This Saturday, W.A.C. entertain R.A.F. West Kirby and Liverpool Pembroke in their triangular fixture at Leasowe Road. On Christmas Eve next Saturday afternoon the traditional Christmas handicap over 4 miles will be held at Leasowe Road with a prize for every runner.
