A last minute fixture arranged when Wirral A.C. found themselves unable to fulfil their engagement, resulted in an excellent race at Leasowe last Saturday, where Wallasey Athletic Club's combined junior and youth's team beat an older team of National Servicemen from R.A.F. West Kirby by the narrow margin of 37 pts. to 41.
This result demonstrated the value of consistent packing, of which W.A.C. youths have been capable throughout the season but which has not hitherto been of sufficient quality to be conducive to victory.
First man home for Wallasey was Ken Ledward (2) (31 min. 22 secs.) who only conceded the winning place in the final run-in after a spirited struggle with his older opponent. Other counters for Wallasey were Scammell (5) (32mins. 25 secs.), Johnson, (6) (33 mins. 14 secs,), Weir (7) (33mins. 58 secs.), Cockshott (8) (34 mins. 45 secs.,), and Lynch (9) (34mins. 47secs.).
Today W.A.C. meet at Liverpool Landing Stage at 2 p.m. for the fixture away with Waterloo Harriers, and in the evening look forward to meeting friends old and new at their dance at the Grosvenor Ballroom.
