In conditions which were far from ideal even for cross-country runners 80 stout
hearted boys battled for positions in the fifth annual Wallasey Schools Cross-Country championships staged from W.A.C. headquarters on Saturday.
Over a heavy 2¼ mile course, Moreton S.M. School again proved themselves superior and were successful in winning the A. G. Nicholson Trophy for the fifth consecutive time. Their counting four were placed 6, 7, 8 and 9, scoring 20 points to the 58 points of St. George's Road S.M. School who were placed second, and the 58 points of Liscard S.M. School, placed third. The rule for a tie was applied to decide second position.
The individual winner, W. Howarth of Liscard S.M. School ran a well judged race to win by three seconds from D. Woods of Oldershaw Grammar School in a time of 16 mins. 5 secs.
In the individual youth championship over a 3 mile course W.A.C. runner K. Ledward gained his second victory, defeating John Lynch by a narrow margin followed by Eric Maddocks and R. Parry in third and fourth positions respectively.
Both races were started by the Director of Education, Mr. H. R. B Wood, who later distributed the prizes.
Secretary of Wallasey Athletic Club in a short speech made reference to the possibility of the competitors running regularly as members of W.A.C.
Training will continue this afternoon for the Club Novice and the West Lancs. Novice Championships and a good turnout is expected.
The Club Dance is being held at Harrison Hall, next Saturday.
