Cybi Coastal Marathon - 26.21 Miles - Saturday 05 August 2023 |
|
Four runners from the club completed the third Cybi Coastal Marathon. The course circumnavigated Ynys Cybi on the coastal path and is hoping to establish itself as one of the most scenic marathons in the UK. The course followed the paths, tracks, beaches and coastline of the Welsh national/Anglesey Coastal Path with fine views of wide bays, sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, the famous South Stack lighthouse and the summit of Holyhead Mountain. First home was Phil Cuthbert in 04:35 for 43rd place. Caet said "I have to say I had mixed feelings entering this 2 weeks ago, a marathon with no proper training, and the weather forecast was dreadful. What started as driving rain and gales turned into a fairly decent day, with the sun putting in an appearance towards the end. Probably the longest 'run' I've ever done at something over 7 hours, but definitely one I'll do again with proper training." Photos |

Tour of Merseyside Overall - 52 Miles - Saturday 01 July 2023 |
|
Olly Chadwick finished of a great week of running with runners-up spot in the Tour of Merseyside. Olly covered the 52 miles in a total 04:58, a great achievement. Olly said "Always one to look forward to in the race season calendar these 6 races in 7 days!! Loved every minute of this week and delighted to be coming away with 2nd place!! It's been an absolute pleasure to have the chance to chase Matthew Crehan [race winner] all this week and aiming to make as much of a race of it as possible going up against a national/international athlete definitely made all the difference in coming away with a new tour PB of 4:58:12 for the 52-mile event." There were also excellent results for the ladies as Michelle ALty finished sixth lady and won her age category as did Jan McArd. There was also an age category win for Rob Perry. Photos |

Derwentwater Dawdle - 24 Miles - Saturday 29 April 2023 |
|
The Derwentwater Dawdle was a challenging but beautiful 24 mile self navigated route that takes in three tough ascents totalling 4300ft as the runners complete a full circuit of Derwentwater in the Lake District. Phil Cuthbert, Katherine Andrews and Caet Cuthbert with Blu completed the course that included some fantastic views. Phil finished in 4 hours 55 minutes for 18th place, Katherine, Caet and Blu in 8:11. Cate said after the race "Tough day in the hills today at the Derwentwater Dawdle. Not made any easier by going over on my ankle mile 3! Fantastic scenery, great company and I think we managed to shave 10 mins off last year's attempt." Photos |

London Marathon - 26.21 Miles - Sunday 23 April 2023 |
|
Three runners from the club participated in the London Marathon and two of them were first time marathoners. Olly Chadwick ran an excellent 2:44 and not far behind was Louis Gorman in 2:49, Caet Cuthbert returned in 5:24. After the race Caet said "That was hard!" and Olly said "First time out racing the marathon, felt absolutely great and was on for 2:33 but the slightly inexperienced legs were beaten a little to early in the last 5 miles. Still I'm proud of the result today, I was patient stuck to what I worked on in training and even when the game plan did go out the window towards the end remained positive and won the mental battle to hold out for a sub 2:45
I've never been one to get things completely right first time I will rest up, see what went wrong then improve on it. Will definitely be out to give the marathon distances another go (potentially end of this year!) I've enjoyed long distance training and there is no doubt the extra endurance has benefited my running as a whole so it's a win win!!
Just like to say a massive thanks to everyone for all the support before, during and after the race definitely was a massive lift." |

Boston Marathon - Monday 17 April 2023 |
|
Jan McArd knocked 4 and a half minutes off her best marathon time at the Boston Marathon finishing in an excellent 3:28:07.
After the race Jan said "The 127th Boston Marathon was amazing and Boston is a really cool city, even if it is the third most expensive city in the U.S (apparently)!
I loved the race and I even enjoyed the rain. There was no pre-race donut, instead I had to make do with 2 blackberry and lemon pies - sugar overload!
I trained for sub 3:30 following Hal Higdon's Marathon plan and it worked as I finished in 3:28:07, my fastest marathon time (out of 3) and first time under 3:30.
The support on the course was superb 'Great job Jan, you've got this' will forever ring in my ears! Heartbreak Hill isn't huge, it just comes at the wrong time! The Expo and organisation was super efficient and everyone was soooooo friendly.
I bought lots of merch to remind me that I've done it (I doubt I'll run it again although I have qualified for 2024!)
I was overwhelmed by the kind words and encouragement from my friends, family and the wider running community. It was lovely spending time with Neil and the UTS Run Club crew. And also the LW who puts up with my running chatter 24/7. I have a million photos so I'll just share a few.
FINALLY, don't ever say, 'I couldn't run a marathon' because in 2015 I couldn't run from one lamppost to another! You just have to take it one step at a time. And I wouldn't have achieved what I have without everyone at Wallasey Athletic Club - thank you and a big thank you to those special few who helped with the training for Boston, you know who you are!"
Neil Toner completed the race with an achilles injury and posted this report. "Boston Marathon 23 - The City On A Hill.
The past seven weeks have been really tough for me both mentally and physically due to the passing of my dad and developing an Achilles injury that stopped my training for what is arguably the world's most prestigious marathon due to its history. To keep the engine ticking over I started punishing (for me) watt bike sessions at the gym pushing myself to the limit in order to maintain a level of fitness.
Anyway, let's get back to Boston. I was still injured going into Boston and if it was any other marathon I would have simply pulled out. I wanted to do it in my dad's memory. I tested the Achilles out two days prior to the marathon in the B.A.A 5k starting at Boston common and running around the streets. It hurt start to finish but didn't worsen afterwards but 10 miles of walking after it wandering around didn't help the cause forcing me to limp at the end of the night.
I had serious doubts that I would make the start line and had to rest all day Sunday with constant icing of the Achilles mixed with painkillers to reduce the swelling (not ideal or recommended).
Monday Morning Race Day- you had to drop your stuff off at near to the finish line in order to collect afterwards to get changed into. You then boarded a bus which took about an hour's bus journey to a little town called Hopkinton. It was a freezing cold misty morning and doubts had really set into whether I could do it.
Honestly from the very start my Achilles was killing me on every foot strike. I thought I'd get to 4 miles and then run/walk the rest. However, I just tolerated the pain and kept going. 3 stops for a wee in the portaloo (too much info I know!) and I was face timing home throughout whilst running and put FaceTime on the final straight so my family could see me finish. I had to run that pace as any quicker and the pain was too unbearable. I just wanted to get through it. I had a great time/laugh with the spectators who kept shouting GO DAD (name on tee shirt) He was with me all of the way as there is no way I would have finished it otherwise. Achilles is mega sore and swollen but doesn't really seem to be any additional damage and since I've rested after arriving home last night the swelling has reduced.
Thank you to my family and all of the people who have offered me support and advice the past seven weeks and last but not least the Boston crew I went with and others who we met there."

Helsby Half Marathon - 13.11 Miles - Sunday 15 January 2023 |
|
The weather was windy and wet for the 39th running of the Helsby Half Marathon. Neil Toner led the Wallasey contingent home with a 01:27:03. Neil said "The plan was to go out with the 1:30 Pacers and then around 11 miles put the hammer down. Didn't go to plan at the start as I was stuck behind the 1:45 pacers on a very congested start. It took me 3 miles to catch the 1:30 pacers which in turn made me run a lot quicker than planned at the start but felt good so thought what the hell. Around mile 10 I naturally went ahead of the pacers and then picked it up the last two miles. Overall a decent run and happy with the fitness." Photos |
