Despite a somewhat blustery and cool wind that played havoc with track performance, 33 club members turned out for the 1965 track and field championships held at Leasowe Road Playing Fields last Saturday.
In the senior men's section, Mike Teahan put his versatility to good use in amassing a total of 1,566 points to win from Carl Gee (1,370 pts.) with Mark Aldridge 3rd (1,306 pts.), whilst John Watkins just beat Barrie Smith by 23 points with Robin Tarrant in 3rd place; their totals were 1,423 1,400 and 1,293 respectively.
Newcomer, Dave Roberts, scored 638 points for his shot putt of 42ft. 2ins. And this helped him to a winning total of 1,329 points, leaving Dave Lockley (1,277 pts.) and Mike Hampson (1,208) in his wake.
Ian Wilson scored his expected win in the boys' section with 1,295 pts. Whilst David Caw (1,008 pts.) edged out Andrew McWhite (934) for second place. There was a disappointing entry in the three ladies' sections with only five competitors taking part from a club membership of over 30, but this did nothing to dampen their efforts and Anne Ward was a close winner over ladies' captain Barbara Banks by 1,689 pts. To 1,658 pts.
In the intermediate section Lorna Swift was a comfortable winner, scoring 1,630 pts. to Violet Sutton's 973 pts. Whilst junior Yvonne Broomhead had the easiest of tasks winning her group with a score of 1,384 pts.
A very strong team has been chosen to represent the borough in today's inter-town youth athletics festival at Kirkby (Liverpool). Last year Wallasey finished in second place, behind home team St. Helens and the 3 points margin should be made up and passed this year.
Next Saturday, Wallasey Athletic Club send a youths' team for the 1 mile race at the Eccles Civic Sports. The team are running well to date and the four i.e. Dave Lockley, Les Watcham, John Jones and Ray Kay will give a good account of themselves.
