Two Wallasey Athletic Club runners have been selected to run for Cheshire in the inter counties championship later this year.
Dave Lindesay has at last achieved the honour he only missed through illness last year, a good run in the senior race gave him seventh place. Bob Brimage gained a place in the junior men's team as second junior to finish in a race held in conjunction with the senior race in which he finished 23rd.
The senior Wallasey team finished fourth behind Wirral AC, Altrincham AC and Stoke AC, thanks to some brave runs by many athletes who had competed the previous night in South Wales and travelled back home to compete in this seven mile event at Arrowe Park. Dave Lockley was 14th, Mike Teahan 40th, Bob Warburton 44th, John Wright in his first run of the season, 44th, Phil Wealthy 48th and Len Durkin 62nd.
The Colts team finished sixth, Eddie Kanes was the outstanding runner, finishing 22nd; he was supported by Brendon Kelly, 26th, Dave Jones 40th, Steve Kelly 49th and Pete Booth 61st.
In the annual New Year's Eve races at Nos Galon several Wallasey athletes produced outstanding runs. Pete Lewis set the evening off well with 9th position in the mile race recording 4 min. 17 sec., a personal best time and leaving him only feet behind the winner. Bob Brimage, who finished 20th, gained the coveted Nos Galon vest with a well-judged run.
In the "Lillian Board Mile" the three Wallasey girls were awarded the vests for their performances, Barbara Banks and Janice Watts ran competent races to finish close together in 9th and 11th positions with Margret Ashcroft improving all the time in 18th place.
The highlight of the evening at Nos Galon was the 4 miles race which begins just before midnight. Traditionally a torch is carried down from the mountains by a mystery runner, this year Dave Bedford. Then the field of over two hundred athletes begins to race round the narrow village streets. Best placed of the Wallasey athletes were Dave Lockley in 25th position, his best placing in three outings there, Bob Brimage 53rd, Bob Warburton in 75th and Pete Lewis 81st. They all gained vests.
Today a strong men's team will be competing in the Liverpool & District Championships at Clarke Gardens, Liverpool.
