The most inspiring performance from Wallasey Athletic Club at Woodchurch last Sunday came from Dave Ashton (pictured) in the men's Cheshire County Championships. Running in the 400 metres, Dave ran a well judged race to win in 54.6 sec., and later won the 200 metres in 25.3 set. against a strong wind down the back straight.
Pete Lewis finished second in the senior 400 metres in 52 sec. and Phil Wade, still a junior, showed promise of a successful season in clocking 54.7 sec.
In the 1,500 metres Bob Warburton finished 4th in the senior race, as did Eddie Kanes in the boys' event. No field events were held owing to a very disappointing entry.
Fortunes were better in the previous day's field events, in the Ladies' County Championships at Port Sunlight, where Kathy Davenport won the high jump and hurdles and finished a close second to Pam Williams in the long jump with 18 ft. 3 in. Susan Hollett did well to finish 3rd in the junior high jump with 4 ft. 5 in.
Barbara Banks scored another win in the senior 1,500 metres in 4 min. 45.5 sec., with Margaret Ashcroft 3rd in 5 min. 0.5 sec. Helen Taylor was 5th in the junior 800 metres, as was Lindsay Hewson in her race in 3 min. 7 sec, Julie Halfpenny produced another encouraging early reason 400 metres time of 64.9 dec., to finish 4th.
Earlier last week at Stretford, Gwyn Griffiths achieved a personal best time of 9 min. 35 sec. in the 3,000 metres. Pete Lewis recently finished 4th in the UAU Championships, running the 800 metres for Birmingham University in 1 min. 53.7 sec.
Another Wallasey athlete, Ian Wilson, represented Leicester University in the same championships and finished 6th in the final of the 400 metres hurdles. Ian has also run a personal best 800 metres in 1 min. 59.8 sec.
