With many members away for Whitsun weekend only a few athletes were able to take part in an inter-club competition at Sale where the cold wintery conditions made good track and field performances difficult.
There was one result, however, which redeemed the afternoon completely and that was Carl Gee's new club record and personal best of 113 ft. 3 in. in the hammer.
Carl, who has recently been voted this year's sports personality of Wallasey, seems to be going from strength to strength in this highly technical event, and this new record will probably be broken a few more times before the end of the season.
In the youth's discus and shot, Chris Preston came third and second respectively and newcomer Ian tried a "Josberg" very successfully to win the high jump.
On the track, Dave Ashton, who is having a wonderfully rewarding season after a winter of hard work, came fourth in the youths 800 metres in a new personal best of 2 min. 9.2 sec., which in better conditions must take Dave down to almost the two-minute mark. He later ran a 200 metres in 24.4 sec., another personal best, to come third.
Eddie Kanes ran the 400 metres in 63.2 sec., showing that he had more speed than he lets on. Though he would do well to work on it. Another newcomer, Log, ran 400 metres in 63.6 sec., without the benefit of spikes or training, which is a very promising result.
Barbara Banks was sole representative of the ladies section and won an 800 metres in a rather slow time.
Next week the ladies are gathering their strength together and trying to show the rest of the North how to do it all in the Northern Championships.
We are hoping for personal bests from everyone, and expect great results especially from Janice Watts (800 and 1,500 metres) and Katherine Davenport (high jump, long jump and 100 metres hurdles).
