With the approach of winter, cross-country running takes its place as one of the foremost English sports, being soundly administered and having a big following of active participants.
Most athletic clubs, in this country at least, are only maintained by the enthusiasts who turn out during the winter months, enthusiasts who, generally speaking, win practically nothing by comparison with their faster and very much fewer clubmates who run on the track.
For this winter Wallasey Athletic Club are again offering every opportunity for local youngsters to take part in cross-country. An expert staff is available at Leasowe Road every Saturday afternoon on all matters appertaining to athletics, including physical fitness, racing fitness and general training. Skilled masseur is also in attendance. Subscriptions are nominal, the charge for under 16 being 1s. per annum. Enrolment can be made any Saturday or by contacting the hon. secretary, R. F. Hubbard, 39 Beech Road, Birkenhead ('phone Birkenhead 3550), or the club captain, John Edwards, 6 Ferndale Avenue, Wallasey (phone Wallasey 4739).
The club's dance at the Grosvenor Ballroom last Saturday evening was well attended and quite up to the high standard set by Wallasey Athletic Club in their social functions.
