The first combat between Homecroft and their new rivals, Wallasey Harriers, took place last Saturday. After considerable deliberation as to the exact nature of the race, it was decided to make it a "mile break" at the close of an easy canter of about five miles.
This was done, and after covering about five miles of very indifferent country, the teams lined up at the New Brighton end of Seabank-road. Both clubs had splendid musters and were about at full strength, the pack numbering about forty runners. The racing on the break was exceedingly warm. Wallasey immediately took matters into their own hands and forced the pace from the commencement, six of their men leading the field at the half distance. The Homecroft men then began to move forward, and the struggle, which became fierce in every feature, resulted in R. Young (Wallasey) snatching the first ticket out of the hands of T. J. Brookes (Homecroft) by a yard, who in turn had a yard lead of Barley. Both the latter men ran with bad judgment, and left themselves with far too much ground to recover in the last 500 yards whereas Young managed to run himself to the last ounce. The placings were follow :-
Homecroft. Wallasey.
W. S. Brookes 4 W. E. Richmond 7
S. L. Brookes 6 H. J. Wilcox 8
G. Mole 9 F. Moon 10
R. J. Downey 11 J. J. Eivers 12
Total 35 Total 43
It will be seen that Homecraft won by eight points, but when it is explained that about ten yards separated the first six men, it will readily understood that it was by no means an easy victory. Special mention must be med of the running of Mole, consistent form week by week speaks volumes of promise for him. The position of Downey in his first race with the club also calls for recognition. Homecroft are to meet Wallasey again in the New Year at Oarside Farm, and the race on that occasion is to be a run through.
To-day (Saturday) Homecroft seek diversion in a football match with the Y.M.C.A. Football Club (kick off at 3 p.m.) in Central Park.
Next Saturday they will again mind their own business on which occasion an easy run will take place, at the conclusion of which a special mile break for novices will be held, a suitable medal being offered for the first man home.
