Groves gets in party mood

Glen Groves played a captain's part in leading Liverpool Harriers to a moral boosting win in the Boxing Day Speke 10k.

Taking the individual prize by three seconds ahead of Bernie Murphy (Liverpool Pembroke Sefton). Groves combined with Lee Cadwallader and Joey Parkinson to secure the team honours.

It was a welcome boost for the Wavertree outfit which frequently failed to turn out full teams in the Liverpool & District Cross Country League before coming within an ace of upsetting Liverpool Pembroke Sefton in the championship. Parkinson now leads the winter Grand Prix Road Race Series following Paul Cadwallader's withdrawal from the Boxing Day event with a pulled hamstring.

Although Liverpool collected honours among the veterans, with Peter Morgan and John Massey taking the over-40 and over-55 awards respectively, there was little strength in depth beyond the winning three.

South Liverpool AC packed well. Steve McEvoy, Peter Warburton and Dave Edwards finishing seventh, eighth and ninth respectively. The surprise packet was Mike Stanley (Wallasey AC), who finished fifth ahead of Maurice Collins (Liverpool Running Club).
