Club Race Reports Season 1972-1973
Cross Country Championships
National - Rawtenstall - 24/02/1973 - Senior Women
Barbara Banks, of Wallasey Athletic Club, who was placed sixth in the National Cross Country Championships in Rawtenstall on Saturday, has won a place in the English athletic team which will be taking part in the International Cross-Country Championships in Gwent, Belgium, on March 17.
Barbara's International career began in 1971 when after two years of complete obscurity in the athletic world she made a big breakthrough finishing fourth in the National Championships of that year.
Christmas Handicap
Christmas Handicap - Leasowe - 23/12/1972 - Seniors
Wallasey Athletic Club's annual Christmas Handicap race last Saturday was well supported from its start on Leasowe Road.
First off was hammer thrower Phil Holmes, in his first attempt at the race, and behind him a host of club athletes set off at various intervals. The three-and-a-half mile race was fairly flat, except for the laborious trek across the sand hills.
Halfway through the race Mary Caldwell took the lead, which she never lost, Pete Lewis, captain of Birmingham University, set the fastest time of the day at 17 mins. 9 secs., but the handicappers were perhaps too generous to the girls competing.
